I tried turning on my Suzuki a week or so ago, and it wouldn’t crank. Thinking the battery was low, I plugged it in to a battery tender until it was fully charged and tried again with the same result. I tried bypassing the starter relay, and just ran a thick wire from the positive terminal to the starter motor, but it still wouldn’t crank. That led me to believe the starter motor was dead, so I bought a replacement. After installing it, it cranked over two or three times and then stopped just like the old starter.
Granted I don’t know the age of the battery, but it has been fully charged (according to my battery tender) when I’ve tried using it. I also haven’t seen any weirdness in the wiring that would cause shorts/ bad grounding/ etc...
What do you all think?

Battery!

Do you hear the solenoid engage?

Battery. it only takes a surface charge, which is why you get the green light on the battery tender, but it’s got no crankin’amps. Time to throw it in the ocean.

I burn them in my trash drum in my front yard. Then recycle the lead aft er I’ve burned about 20 of them.

Likely the battery. I was discussing this with BaconSandwichIsTasty last month when he was having similar issues.

It clicks once when I hit the starter

Got it. I’ll have to make do with Lake Erie though

That's a shame, the last time I was at Erie it looked like the fish had finally stopped washing up dead on the shore..

Sulfated battery-- “seems” to charge to a nominal voltage, but the sulfates on the plate don’t conduct much, so current delivery is miniscule.

It’s not bad at all these days. Our river here in Cleveland doesn’t even catch on fire anymore

As others have said, most likely the battery. Have you checked the liquid level in the cells? Also, how old is the battery?

I haven’t, and it came with the bike so condition is unknown. In typical fas hion it worked fine when I rode it home and then died a few days later...

Yeah , sounds about right on a used purchase. Some batteries are stamped or labeled with a manufacturing month/ year.
If the bike fell over or took a hard bump, it’s possible a plate inside the battery was bent but that’s unlikely.
Probably best just to replace it.

If/when you replace the battery, I do recommend to spend the extra few bucks and get the sealed AGM type. So much less fussy than lead acid .

i just read this having experienced the exact same thing with my interceptor. while waiting for a new battery and acid to arrive, i bought a power bank style jump starter. holy cow that thing spinned the starter so fast,
couldnt believe it! definitely try it
, it changed my life. project farm did a comparo video on youtube, but i just bought the $30 amazon best seller. :thumbsup
